What have we been doing?
October 25
We have been very busy in Math and Science 9 since the year began.
We have recently completed our Space Exploration Unit in Science. In this unit, students were engaged in learning about the technologies that have been developed to allow humans to explore places away from the Earth. Key understandings that students have developed include the fact that sometimes our ideas are wrong and we need to accept developing knowledge. Students have also explored ethical questions related to space travel and inhabiting other planets.
Our next unit for Science is Biological Diversity which will look at the different organisms that inhabit the Earth.
In Math, we have had an ongoing focus on rational numbers which will continue throughout the year. We have been working with comparing numbers using number lines, and sorting numbers into different number systems. This work comprises about 25% of each Math class.
During the remainder of the class time, students have participated in statistics investigations, which involved interpreting real world statistics through reading articles, and assessing the reliability of these statistics. Students have also started to work with symmetry and scale factor through hands on activities as well as some written notes.
We encourage you to ask your child about what they are learning in classes, as being able to communicate their learning with others is a way for them to assess whether or not they are understanding the concepts.
